Successfully Defended NRP Audit

Client owned six businesses, including several auto shops and an ambulance dealership. Client was randomly audited for the 2021 tax year under the National Research Program. NRP audits are random audits solely made for the IRS benefit, to: (1) "enable the IRS to gather strategic information about taxpayer compliance behavior to improve the allocation of resources to enforcement and other activities", (2) "to assist the IRS in developing and updating its workload selection formulas so that it pursues productive examinations and does not unnecessarily burden taxpayers or waste resources" and (3) to "collect data with the goal of gathering insight into the causes of reporting errors to aid in improving taxpayers (eg, improved forms, communications, education, and suggest legislative changes)." While these goals sound benign, the targeted taxpayer has to bear the expense and anxiety of a full-blown audit. The Wilson Firm successfully defended the audit by substantiating the income and deductions with profit & loss statements, bank statements, receipts, etc., and the result was a "no change" victory for the client.
